My lifelong residence in the city and 25 years working in city government have afforded me the opportunity to acquire the cumulative knowledge that makes me uniquely qualified to be controller of this great city. My areas of expertise include the following:

  • Business and Finance: I graduated from the University of Houston-Downtown with a Bachelor of Business Administration and earned a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance while a working mother.
  • Financial Reporting: While working in the City Controller’s Office over the past fourteen (14) years, I have participated in the review and assessment of financial reports related to the annual comprehensive financial reports. The Financial Reporting Division prepares reports that provide a comprehensive view of the city’s financial health and help in making informed decisions.
  • Internal Controls: I have been involved in establishing and maintaining strong internal controls to prevent financial mismanagement.
  • Auditing: As the Chief Deputy City Controller, I review and discuss audit reports and plans with the City Auditor before the release of audit reports. Audits provide insights into the effectiveness of financial operations and identify areas for improvement.
  • Presentation and Public Speaking: In my current role, I have spoken to several groups in a variety of contexts, including presenting monthly financial reports to the Houston City Council.
  • City Agenda Process: I was responsible for preparing two council members on Agenda items, affording me a thorough understanding of the ordinance voting process.
  • Risk Management: I identified and managed financial risks, evaluating potential risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Financial Policy Development: I have participated in the review, development and implementation of financial policies and procedures that guide city government financial operations.
  • Transparency and Accountability: I have helped ensure financial information is accessible to the public and that the city uses taxpayer funds responsibly.
  • Human Resources: I have assisted in managing the Controller’s Office workforce and working closely with the Human Resources Department as it relates to staffing needs.
